Application of KVM Extender In The Automation Control of Maritime Vessels

Background

On ships, sensitive devices that need to be centrally managed are more than on land. The processes need to staff to monitor at all times. If the weather changes or the working environment is harsh, such as salt in the air, high humidity, waves, and vibrations, the equipments are prone to malfunction. This is not what we expected.

For this reason, the devices are usually housed in an accessed server room in the lower deck. This way can keep the devices away from hazards such as wind, snow, and seawater, guaranteeing a higher level of maintenance and management and extending the life of expensive devices.

However, it is not easy to gather all the devices in a remote place and ensure that the ship’s crew can use them normally, conveniently, and comfortably in any area of the ship.

Purpose

  • Separate users from the machine and provide an optimal operating environment
  • Implement group sharing. The rapid changeover of equipment allows operators to independently configure groups for control and monitoring in multi-storey port buildings
  • Support the operation of loading goods with a crane or the implementation of the ship’s logistics system.
  • Satisfy the requirements of working temperature and storage temperature in complex offshore environments, and transmit high-quality audio and video information in real-time without delay.

Solution

Kinan proposes a perfect KVM solution according to the needs of customers. It is a general access, management, and distribution system composed of a KVM transmitter, KVM receiver, and IP KVM remote management and control software.

In the lower deck of the ship, the devices that manage the monitoring, crane, and controller separately are connected to the KVM transmitter. It compresses losslessly all signals and transmits them to the KVM receiver equipped in the control room on the deck via Cat X or fiber cable. Then the KVM receiver will output the photoelectric information to the console display, keyboard, and mouse.

(Kinan KVM extender supports single-mode fiber and multi-mode fiber. The maximum transmission distance of single-mode fiber is 80km, but that of multi-mode fiber is 300m. Cat X cable can support up to 150m.)

Therefore, the IP KVM remote management and control software for the transmitter and receiver provides direct access to remote computers from every console (operator) of the maritime vessel system.

The administrator logged in to the software configures the access, operation, and monitoring of each electronic device in the system from each console.

Advantagee

  • Adopts Private Video Encoding Protocol (JPEG) to transmit video with visual lossless compression, ultra-high-definition 4k resolution, and ultra-low latency.
  • The operator can access the server to which he has access from any seat, switching betweem different servers via the on-screen-display menu.
  • After deploying multiple servers, when one of the servers is unresponsive, you can quickly switch to other servers through the IP KVM remote management control system.
  • KVM extender allows users to access servers in the strong-cooled cabinets via a network connection without limitation of distance.
  • The IP KVM remote management and control system provides a visual operation interface for operation and maintenance management, which provides unmatched convenience for users to troubleshoot and avoid risks, ensuring the normal operation of the business system.
  • Support point-to-point dial-up connection of gigabit network switches.
